13 Reasons Why You Matter – A Response to the Netflix Original Series

On Friday, Netflix released it’s new show Thirteen Reasons Why based on the young adult novel by Jay Asher. In thirteen hours the show depicts the reasons that brought a high school junior to take her own life. I’ll be honest with you, it was really difficult to watch. I wouldn’t necessarily “recommend” the show, as there is violence, language, and mature content. I will say, though, that I think it does accurately portray a part of the high school experience for a lot of students. I’ve talked with students that have been bullied, abused, sexually assaulted and contemplated suicide. In fact the picture with this article is from an outreach event that we did last summer. We spent eight Thursday nights meeting students who were walking through these types of pains. Its real and its happening, and not just on television shows.

As much as I believe that “suicide is not an option,” some people believe that it is. If you’re one of those people, the ones that think life would be better without you in it, please read on. In response to the “Thirteen Reasons Why” and the character who took her own life, here are thirteen reasons why you matter enough to save yours.

1. You are loved

Even when it feels like no one cares, there will always be people who care about you. Your life has left a mark on someone else’s. That’s the beauty of relationships. And if it seems like that’s not true for you – there is a man named Jesus who has always loved you and will never stop loving you. He has so much love to give you. He loved you enough to sacrifice His own life to save yours for eternity“When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners.

“Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. ” Romans 5:6-8

2. You are worth it

You were included when Jesus gave his life for the world. Jesus gave his life to save you, too. You are worth it to God, which makes you worth it to all of us. Your life has meaning!

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:16-17

3. You are unique

There has never been, nor will there ever be, another you. There will never be another combination of traits that will replace you. You are you. No one else can ever take your place.

” You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. ” Psalm 139:13-16

4. You are strong

I know there are moments in life where it feels like you just can’t get through it. But I promise, you have more strength in you than you think. You are stronger than you know. You can make it through.  And when you don’t feel strong enough – Christ in you IS.

“For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13

5. You have a future

Life can really knock you down for a season. But there is hope. It does get better, even when it seems like it won’t.

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ says the Lord. ‘They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.'” Jeremiah 29:11

6. You have a voice

Your experiences, pains, and struggles could identify with someone else too. You have a voice that needs to be heard. You could end up being the light in someone else’s darkness.

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.” Proverbs 31:8

7. You have something to offer

Even though it may not seem like it right now, you are gifted and talented. You have talent and love to give.

“God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.” 1 Peter 4:10

8. You have a purpose

God created you with intention. He made you for a purpose on this earth. There are still things that God wants to do in your life. You may not see it now, but He has made you on purpose and for a purpose!

“I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me” Psalm 57:2

9. You are not an accident

This goes along with your purpose. You were not made on accident. Your life is not an accident. Your life is intentional – which means that you have meaning.

“I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart…” Jeremiah 1:5a

10. You are not defined by your past

Whether it is regret of things you have done or pain of what has been done to you – your past does not define you. We have the opportunity, through Jesus, to be defined by HIS grace instead of our own pain. Our present and future can be defined by God’s goodness rather than our own.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:8-10

11. You are not a label

Whatever it is that someone has labeled you as is not WHO you ARE. The things we struggle with are just that – struggles. They are not us. Who you are is a child of God. You have the opportunity to be a part of his family just through believing in Jesus.

“For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:26

12. You are not alone

You may feel alone right now. But I promise that you are not the only one feeling this way. There are other people who have walked this road too, or are walking it now. Even in our deepest times of loneliness, God is still with us.

“So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the LORD your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

13. I believe in you and I love you

Whether I know you or not – I believe in you and I love you. No matter what – I see value in you because God placed immense value on you. Your life matters to me and to so many others. You matter. If you’re still feeling lost and alone – I’m here for you and would love to talk with you.

Let’s love each other and treat one another well. You never know what’s going on in someone else’s life.

1 John 4:7 “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.”
